About Thorney Mire Lookout...

A luxury wood cabin situated in 3 acres of private ancient woodland.
The cabin has been hand crafted using larch and Douglas Fir and features a Scandinavian wood fired hot tub on the deck.
Watch red squirrels play right outside the cabin doors as well as a vast array of birds and other wildlife.
Relaxing in the Scandinavian wood fired hot tub whilst the red squirrels play in the nearby trees is a unforgettably magical experience.
We aim to offer a truly relaxing and luxurious escape with all the facilities that you could possibly need.

The Cabin is located in ancient woodland opposite Thorney Mire Barn, in a secluded location just outside Appersett, 1.5 miles from the market town of Hawes in Wensleydale.
Red squirrels, roe deer and many species of bird frequent the woodland. There are squirrel feeders located on the deck and in front of the cabin, and are visited daily by red squirrels.
There are numerous footpaths that take you on wonderful country walks in all directions from the cabin.
Hawes is just a 25 minute walk away, with its shops, tea rooms, pubs, restaurants and the Wensleydale Creamery (where the famous cheese is made).

Some factors to consider before booking Thorney Mire Lookout...

  •   The Lookout is accessed via some uneven stone steps, a woodchip path and wooden stairs.

  •   After dark, the woods can be very dark, and due to the National Parks “darker skies” policy the path is not lit. A torch will be provided. There is a light at the hut's entrance.

  •   The Eco Toilet isn’t very different to a normal toilet, but it does require a small change to your “normal habits” (see https://www.kildwick.com/shop/eco-loo-divert-waterless-composting-toilet/ for more info).

  •   The changing seasons each have their pro’s and con’s:
    •   Spring time: Spring flowers and in May a carpet of wild garlic. Before the leaves form on the trees, red squirrels are easier to spot and views beyond can be seen through the trees. The weather can be delightful in Spring, particularly in May.

    •   Summer: The trees are green and beautiful, the weather can be hot and sunny. But the warmer months can bring out the insects, midges in particular. We will have midge screens fitted in the hut but if you’re bothered by insects, June to September may not be the best months for you. Please talk to us if you have any concerns.

    •   Autumn: The trees turn to stunning autumn colours in late October. The red squirrels are busy collecting and storing food. The weather can turn very wet and windy in Autumn. In extreme windy conditions we may have to advise that it’s unsafe to stay in the hut due to the possibility of falling branches.

    •   Winter: Once again, the bare trees make red squirrel spotting easier and the views open up. The colder temperatures make for bracing country walks and welcome visits to the local pubs to sit in front of a roaring fire!
